The mission and history of the Oregon County Library District.

MISSION

The mission of the Oregon County Library District is to make available to the residents of Oregon County a diverse collection of human wisdom, experience and ideas.  The library makes accessible and promotes the use of informative and creative resources by which people of all ages, abilities and circumstances can pursue their educational, professional and recreational interests.  

BACKGROUND

In 1978 the voters of Oregon County voted for the Oregon County Library District to become independent of the Current River Regional Library.  The District is supported by a county property tax.  A five member board appointed by the Oregon County Commission governs it.  

Today the Oregon County Library District has five branch locations, serves over 11,000 residents, has a collection of over 60,000 books and periodicals.  In addition there are audio materials, CD's and visual materials such as DVD's and VHS tapes.  Additional materials are available through Missouri Evergreen consortium.  E-books, audio and video materials are available through Missouri Libraries 2 Go.
